What is the Mandatory Vehicle Branding Programme?

Ontario’s mandatory vehicle programme is aimed  at increased protection of consumers for used vehicles as well as minimizing fraud and theft in vehicle registration. it also focuses on enhancing the safety on the roads.

Coming into effect on 31 march, 2003 the mandatory vehicle branding programme is aimed at making the roads of the province safer.the process of branding is a process of tagging the vehicles according to the damage done to them in the past. The brand which is assigned to the vehicle is then added to the ministry of transportation vehicle registration system.

The four brand types that are present are :Irreparable, Salvage, Rebuilt, None.

The companies dealing in insurance, recyclers and people dealing in automobile parts, salvagers and even owners of vehicles must assign a brand type to the vehicle in terms of the complete losses incurred and the brand type in which it would come. This would then be submitted to the transportation ministry.

The mandatory branding programme is is initiated seeing the success of similar programmes in the United States and Canada and prevents theft and fraud in registration of vehicles.

How does mandatory vehicle branding help me as a consumer?

Earlier, what happened was that some old battered vehicles were rebuilt and sold again to customers. It helps to provide all the information about the past damage of the car to a customer. This would enable you to know if the vehicle you are buying is:
  • Cannot be repaired and for spare parts only
  • Salvage
  • Rebuilt according to structural standards set by MTO

The Four Vehicle Brands

Cannot be repaired

  • The vehicle is written off as a total loss
  • The parts could be used .
  • it cannot be ever driven gain.

Salvage

  • Vehicle has been regarded as total loss.
  • Neither can it be repaired or the parts used.
  • On repairing it should pass a structural test by an authorized technician.
  • It would be called rebuilt if it passes the test.

Rebuilt

  • The vehicle has been branded as salvage and has been repaired.
  • The owner must possess necessary photographs for the vehicle to pass as rebuilt
  • It should have been issued a certificate in a Ministry Of Transportation
  • Only the cars with rebuilt or none certificates can be bought for on road use.

None

  • The vehicle may have not been damaged ever
  • The degree of damage might be very small
  • Might have been damaged before March 31, 2003
